<artistdesc>Robert Sylvester Kelly (born January 8, 1967) is an American singer, songwriter, and record producer who has been convicted on racketeering and sex offender charges.Kelly has sold over 75 million records worldwide, making him the most commercially successful male R&B artist of the 1990s and one of the world's best-selling music artists. The Recording Academy awarded him three Grammys for "I Believe I Can Fly," and nominated him twice for collaborations with Michael Jackson. He has a discography that spans three decades. Critics have dubbed him "the King of R&B." He has proclaimed himself the "Pied Piper of R&B."Starting in the 1990s Kelly faced accusations of using his fame to lure young fans, including minors, into inappropriate sexual relationships. He stood trial in Chicago for child pornography, winning acquittal. Kelly evaded lasting consequences until the 2019 documentary Surviving R. Kelly provoked backlash. RCA Records terminated his recording contract and law enforcement in New York, Chicago, and Minneapolis built new criminal cases against him.
A 2021 trial in Brooklyn federal court convicted Kelly for violations of the Mann Act and racketeering, resulting in a 30-year prison sentence. Starting August 2022, Kelly faces another trial in Chicago federal court for corruptly fixing his 2008 Illinois trial. As of July 2022, Kelly is an inmate of Metropolitan Correctional Center, Chicago with federal register number 09627-035. He continues to challenge his New York conviction and pleads not guilty to the charges in Illinois.</artistdesc>
