<artistdesc>Robert Sylvester Kelly (born January 8, 1967) is an American singer, songwriter, record producer, and convicted sex offender. He has been credited with helping to redefine R&B and hip hop, earning nicknames such as "the King of R&B", "the King of Pop-Soul", and the "Pied Piper of R&B".Kelly is known for songs including "I Believe I Can Fly", "Bump N' Grind", "Your Body's Callin'", "Gotham City", "Ignition (Remix)", "If I Could Turn Back the Hands of Time", "The World's Greatest", "I'm a Flirt (Remix)", and the hip hopera "Trapped in the Closet". In 1998, Kelly won three Grammy Awards for "I Believe I Can Fly". Although Kelly is primarily a singer and songwriter, he has written, produced, and remixed songs, singles, and albums for other artists. In 1996, he was nominated for a Grammy Award for writing Michael Jackson's song "You Are Not Alone".Kelly has sold over 75 million records worldwide, making him the most successful R&B male artist of the 1990s and one of the world's best-selling music artists. In 2010, Billboard magazine considered Kelly the most successful R&B artist in history and listed him as the Top R&B/Hip Hop Artist for the time period between 1985 and 2010.For more than two decades, Kelly was accused of the sexual abuse of young adults and minors. The abuse allegations included an illegal marriage to underage protégé Aaliyah in 1994, a video depicting Kelly abusing a minor aged 13 at the time which was published in 2002, and a "cult-like" atmosphere obtaining sexual violence against underage females which was exposed in 2017. A jury trial for a 21-count child pornography indictment was held in 2008; he was acquitted, and his career appeared unaffected. In 2019, after Lifetime aired docuseries Surviving R. Kelly, which alleged Kelly continued a pattern of physical, sexual, and psychological abuse of women and girls, RCA Records terminated Kelly's contract with the label after mounting pressure from the public using the Mute R. Kelly movement against him; yet he maintained his innocence. Kelly was indicted and charged in three respective states of his birthstate of Illinois, New York, and Minnesota for 10 counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse in Cook County by a grand jury in February; an additional 11 counts of sexual assault and abuse were filed against Kelly by the same court the following May. He was arrested again in July by the New York City Police Department and Homeland Security Investigations on federal charges related to his physical and sexual abuse of young adults and minors. Prosecutors argued against allowing Kelly release on any bail package, with which judges agreed. Kelly faced a total of 22 federal criminal charges by August 2021. He repeatedly denied the charges. That month, the federal trial, set up by the United States Attorney for the Eastern District of New York, began in Brooklyn. Eleven witnesses testified to Kelly's sexual violence, including two men who alleged Kelly sexually abused them as children. After a month of testimony and evidence, he was found guilty on a total of nine criminal counts including violations of the Mann Act and racketeering on September 27. The racketeering count alleges a pattern of predicate crimes including of bribery, sexual exploitation of a child, and human trafficking. The judge ordered Kelly to remain in custody pending sentencing, which is set for June 29, 2022. Kelly continues to challenge his New York conviction.Kelly is now scheduled to face another federal trial in the Northern District of Illinois starting August 1, 2022 alongside his former employees. The charges in this trial allege Kelly both produced child sexual abuse material and conspired with employees to corruptly win his 2008 acquittal.</artistdesc>
